For non-wrestling fans and younger audiences, though, The Rock is more commonly known as actor Dwayne Johnson, who has lent his talents to big-budget movies like Moana and much of the Fast and Furious franchise. When the WWF invested its efforts in distributing their content through pay-per-view television, Stone Cold became a big draw. The star was worth an estimated $45 million as of 2018. He has also been arrested several times on charges of domestic abuse; his ex-wife, Debra Marshall, has even described incidents in which the WWE covered up her bruises with makeup to protect Austin and, consequently, their profits.

Bill Goldberg decided to use his last name as his handle when he entered professional wrestling. The Oklahoma native had been a promising young athlete in college, playing football for the University of Georgia; in 1990, he was drafted to play in the NFL. Jonathan Coachman AKA The Coach – Age 42

While not a wrestler himself, commentator Jonathan Coachman was a very popular figure in the WWE. The television personality, who went by the name “The Coach,” played college basketball in Kansas but found that he was more interested in the theatrical side of sports. After offering play-by-play narration on local football broadcasts, Coachman joined the WWE in 1999. He went on to host Raw and was eventually promoted to General Manager of that series in 2007. Coachman’s other sports commentary credits include an interview slot on ESPN’s Sports Center and a hosting gig on his own radio show, Coach & Company.

Santana, who started life as Merced Solis in South Texas, played football for West Texas State University; he was later drafted to play in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was cut during training season. Rather than face bankruptcy, the athlete accepted the guidance of his former college teammate, wrestler Tully Blanchard, and first performed with the WWF in 1979. He later adopted the stage name Tito Santana and in his WrestleMania appearances, helped to usher in a new age of professional wrestling in the ’90s.

Fred Ottman went by several different names in his long professional wrestling career, but his most memorable moniker was Tugboat. Tugboat left professional wrestling in 2001 and now works in Florida as a manager for a cleaning service.

He joined the WWF in 1991 where he feuded with The Undertaker before competing in Japan with the All Japan Pro Wrestling franchise in 1994. Nord left wrestling altogether in 2002, but it hasn’t been all smooth sailing since his departure — because the WWE did not sufficiently describe wrestling’s risks or provide him with a health savings account, he became part of a class action lawsuit in 2016 to recoup money spent on his traumatic brain injuries.

Aaron Haddad AKA Damien Sandow – Age 35

Damien Sandow, not to be confused with older wrestler Damián 666, started to train as a wrestler when he was only 16. He joined the WWE in 2003 where he debuted as Aaron Stevens and had high-profile bouts with fighters like Raven and Scotty 2 Hotty. It wasn’t until 2010 that the entertainer changed his ring name to Damien Sandow, a shift that was accompanied by a more edgy persona. Damien’s career hit a high point when he won a Money in the Bank match and a chance at a championship in 2013. He has since appeared in a string of low-budget horror movies, and his acting credits include The Devil’s Rejects and Driftwood.

James Harris became famous during a different era in professional wrestling. The six-foot, ten-inch tall performer debuted as The Cajun Giant in upstate New York before joining the WWF and re-branding his persona as Kurrgan The Interrogator, a villain who was fond of putting his opponents into the Iron Claw hold. Although he had no problem earning money as a wrestler, Maillet gave his checking account an even greater boost when he began to appear in movies. He has starred in big-budget hits like 300 and Pacific Rim.

David Heath AKA Gangrel – Age 49

David William Heath, better known to wrestling fans as Gangrel, started wrestling in the independent circuit in his home state of Florida. Inspired by the 1987 horror movie The Lost Boys, he took on a vampire persona, going so far as to modify his incisors into prominent fangs. In 1998, he adopted the name Gangrel, after a character in a vampire-themed role-playing game and orchestrated elaborate, blood-filled gimmicks with the WWF until 2001. Perhaps due to a low salary or unstable financial planning, Gangrel is still working on independent circuits to earn a living. He also directs adult movies.

At 306 pounds, Vladimir Kozlov is one of the largest performers in professional wrestling. The wrestler, whose real name is Oleg Aleksandrovich Prudius, was born in what is now Uzbekistan and was an all-around athlete in his youth, playing football in the United States for Santa Barbara City College. Perhaps due to his intimidating stature and politicized heritage, Prudius was dubbed Vladimir Kozlov when he premiered with the WWE in 2006. Perhaps because he considered the market outlook for professional wrestling to be somewhat bleak for long-term employment, Prudius started working as a stuntman in movies like Fast & Furious 6 and John Wick 2 in the mid 2010s.

Tyrone Evans AKA Michael Tarver – Age 41

In 1997, he left WWF for Extreme Championship Wrestling, at the time a relatively new league. It was at ECW that Polaco took on the grungy, rebellious persona of Justin Credible and won the CyberSlam championship in 2000. The performer left professional wrestling in 2015.

Ed Leslie AKA Brutus Beefcake – Age 60

It’s easy to see why Brutus Beefcake adopted such an over-the-top, hyper-masculine persona; the entertainer’s real name of Ed Leslie wasn’t very likely to strike fear into the hearts of his opponents. When he first started, he wrestled alongside a young Hulk Hogan, who was billed as his brother. Ed made his debut as Brutus Beefcake with the WWF in 1984 and remained with the franchise for a whopping nine years. A parasailing accident in 1990 shattered many of the bones in Brutus’ face, requiring him to undergo a long and costly surgery. Perhaps in the interest of medical debt relief, Brutus returned to the WWF just a year later; he retired in 2000, but has made occasional appearances in the years since.

Tammy later moved on to the WWF, where she developed the Sunny character, who was one half of the villain tag team The Bodydonnas. Since leaving wrestling, Sytch has had a few run-ins with the law; she was most recently arrested and held on bond in 2018 for failing to show up for a court date related to an earlier DUI charge.

Raymond John Leppan AKA Adam Rose – Age 38

Adam Rose is a testament to the global popularity of professional wrestling. Adam, who was born Raymond Leppan in South Africa, grew up wanting to be a wrestler, and developed a character for himself as early as age 15. After working small entertainment circuits in his home country for several years, the wrestler chased bigger career dividends in the United States, joining regular WWE shows in 2011.
